Defending champions Khulna Division posted maiden triumph when they outmatched Barisal Division by comprehensive 239 runs on the fourth and final day of the second round affair in the Tier-1 of the Walton National Cricket League yesterday.
At the Shaheed Chandu Stadium in Bogra, the top-Tier match between Dhaka Division and Rangpur Division, along with, Tier-2 match of Rajshahi Division and Chittagong Division at the Shaheed Kamruzzaman Stadium ended in draws.
Elsewhere at the Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium (SKICS) Academy ground, the Tier-2 fixture of the Dhaka Metro and Sylhet Division has been abandoned as it didn’t roll onto the ground due to the rains and wet soggy outfield condition.
Khulna vs Barisal
At the Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium, Barisal Division needed 370 more runs to win the match when they had a full day and 10 wickets in hands. The visiting side made a solid start after resuming the final day at 32-0 as Fazle Mahmud Rabbi hit 58 runs with Rafsan Al Mahmud for the opening stand before the fall of Rafsan, who chipped in with 27.
Rabbi therefore attempted to build up big partnerships with fellow batsmen but they could not make any gritty resistance against the experienced spinner Abdur Razzak and unheralded Moinul Islam.
The 29-year-old left-handed opener, who was the last batsman to fall for 88, though stood tall at one end, the other side was vulnerable as wickets were tumbling in that end in the face of their spell-bounded and venomous deliveries.
Before going to the lunch break, Barisal lost their five top and middle-order batsmen in the space of 92 runs. Left-arm orthodox Moinul Islam opened the proceedings when he got rid of Rafsan Al Mahmud. Later the youngster removed Shamsul Islam and Salman on the trot. Thereafter Abdur Razzak sent back Al Amin Jr and Sohag Gazi, who later added another three wickets in his kitty. The veteran spinner, who served a 10-year-long stint for the national side, was more ruthless on Abu Sayem and Kamrul Islam Rabbi as the duo trudged back to the pavilion for duck.
Abdur Razzak conceded 32 runs to grab five wickets including the prized wicket of Fazle Mahmud and Moinul Islam gave away 19 runs to claim three wickets for the winners. Fazle Mahmud top-scored for Barisal with 88. His patient 171-ball knock was laced with eight boundaries and three sixes.
Khulna Division had declared their second innings at 216-7 following their healthy first inning total of 444, whereby man- of-the- match Mehedi Hasan’s contribution was 177. In reply, Barisal Division wrapped up for 163 after their first innings of 258.
Rajshahi vs Chittagong
Resuming the fifth day at 147-1, Rajshahi Division managed to put on 415 in response to Chittagong’s first inning total of 432.
Overnight batsmen Jahurul Islam Omee and Nazmul Hossain Shanto could not stretch their innings as the duo fell in the gap of 18 runs. Omee clattered 79 and Nazmul lashed for 38.
Since then, Junaid Siddique hit 116 runs with Forhad Hossain for the fourth wicket partnership. Former national opener, Junaid, cracked 77 off 98 with 10 fours and two sixes.
Farhad Hossain also made fifty-plus score after Omee and Junaid. He faced 113 deliveries to make 60 that was studded with half-a-dozen boundaries.
Pace all-rounders Muktar Ali (31) and Forhad Reza (29) were the other notable contributors to Rajshahi’s innings.
Mohammad Saifuddin took three wickets, whilst Mehedi Hasan Rana and Iftekhar Sajjad Rony snared two wickets each for Chittagong, who finished the day to put on just one run on the board before the two rivals captains agreed to a mutual draw.
