RAJSHAHI: All sorts requisite measures will be adopted to resolve the existing problems in Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) within next 90 days, reports BSS. BMDA has laudable contribution towards making the country self-reliance in food production besides making the Barind region green and the region scored significant progress in crop production following the expansion of irrigation facilities along with supplying water from the re-excavated canals and ponds.

Even in around 25 years back, only a single crop could be produced in the areas depending on the rainfall. But, at present, at least three crops are being harvested by dint of the expanded irrigation facilities. So, there will no problem in its operational and administrative activities, asserted Dr Akram Hossain Chowdhury, newly appointed chairman of BMDA.
He was sharing views with media personnel at the BMDA conference hall in the city yesterday. Executive Director Kamal Uddin, Secretary Dewan Abdus Samad and Superintending Engineers Abdur Rashid and Dr Abul Kashem, among others, were present on the occasion. There are enormous untapped potentialities in the region and necessary steps will be adopted to uncover the potentialities for making the region economically solvent.
The BMDA has brought 7.52 lakh hectares including 2.61 lakh hectares of irri- boro land under irrigation facilities through operating 14,090 power-driven deep tube-wells (DTWs). The irrigated lands in the Barind tract have yielded around 61.08 lakh tonnes of additional crops annually.
Dr Akram mentioned that the present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is very much positive towards making the organisation more effective and welfare-oriented. He said the government has attained remarkable success in agriculture sector and urged the BMDA officials concerned to put in their collective efforts to uphold the success in the days ahead. He said there was no need of importing rice in last three years as we had adequate production to feed the nation. Dr Akram Chowdhury said the role of agriculture sector is very vital towards making the country’s economy functional alongside ensuring food security. He called upon the field level officials to discharge their duties with utmost sincerity and honesty.
He mentioned that the government has attached highest priority to the agriculture sector and added that the field level officials and researchers should take the responsibilities of reaching the government’s services to the farmers doorsteps. The BMDA will always work to supplement the government endeavors, he added. Transparency and accountability will be ensured in all its activities.
