Vehicles of state minister, secretary of ministry, judge, ruling party leaders, police, journalists and others were penalised yesterday during a police drive, participated by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman Iqbal Mahmud, at Eskaton in the capital. Actions were taken against a total of 64 vehicles by Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) traffic for rules violation, particularly for driving on the wrong side of the road. Around 40 of these vehicles belonged to various government offices. One of the vehicles belonged to State Minister for Social Welfare Nuruzzaman Ahmed, said police.
The special police drive, in presence of the ACC chairman, continued for two hours from 4pm-6pm in front of state guest house Sugandha. When contacted, DMP Assistant Commissioner (traffic-Ramna) Mohammad Alauddin told The Independent that the ACC chairman himself was present during the drive. Top police personnel including Joint Commissioner (traffic) Mosleuddin Ahmed were present. Driving on the wrong side of the road in the capital has become a common practice for the powerful and influential people, especially political leaders and government high-ups.
