Police yesterday foiled the pre-scheduled programme of private university students who wanted to submit memoranda to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, demanding withdrawal of VAT on education. The students, who staged sit-in programme at Shahbagh before marching towards PM’s office, alleged that some of the students were injured when police obstructed them who tried to break the three layers barricade. The students under the banner ‘No Vat on Education’ has been continuing its programme on the single demand to withdraw VAT on education soon after the finance minister levied the VAT during his budget session.
The minister in his budged session announced 10 per cent VAT on private university and medical and engineering colleges but later it was fixed at 7.5 per cent at the revised budged but the students were adamant and continued their demand for its complete withdrawal.
As part of the programme, they gathered at the venue Shahbagh but it was foiled by police.
Coordinator of the No Vat On Education Farhan Habib said, “Honourable prime minister, please withdraw the 7.5 per cent Vat on education to create a fair environment for education. Please, do not hamper our academic life by keeping the VAT.” Urging the students to expedite the programme in future, he said, “No police can suppress the just demand of the student.”
The agitated students vowed to continue their movement to realise their demand.
