Call for protecting rivers

Speakers at a seminar on Sunday urged the government to take immediate steps to protect the country's existing rivers, reports UNB.

Nodi Songskar Pani Sashon O Bebohar Sangram Parishad organised the programme in the city, marking the World Rivers Day.

Mentioning that local powerful people are grabbing the rivers in the name of development, the speakers also called for reclaiming those and saving them from dying.

They lamented the lack of appropriate laws to protect the rivers, saying those are being exploited in many ways by some corrupt people as there is no law.

Former Industries Minister Dilip Barua and Nodi Songskar Pani Sashon O Bebohar Sangram Parishad President Shahadat Hossain Hamja, among others, spoke on the occasion.

Meanwhile, Jatiya Ganatantrik League formed a human chain in front of the Jatiya Press Club in the morning marking the World Rivers Day observed across the globe today.

Speakers at the programme said the country's all rivers must be protected to ensure a better environment.

The theme of this year's day was 'Encroachment-pollution free rivers: Save Life and Nature.' Bangladesh has been observing the World Rivers Day since 2010.

Bangladesh is a riverine country. About 700 rivers, including tributaries, flow through the country constituting a waterway of total length of around 24,140 kms.

Most of the country's land is formed through silt brought by the rivers.

Another reports adds: The World Rivers Day was observed in the country as elsewhere across the globe yesterday.

The theme of this year's World Rivers Day is ‘Encroachment-pollution free rivers: Save Life and Nature.’  

Earlier on Saturday, a road march programme was held marking the day where Water Resources Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud took part along with a good number of participants.

At the programme, the minister claimed that about 40 per cent pollution of Buriganga River has reduced due to removal of leather industry from the city's Hazaribagh area.

“The shifting of Hazaribagh tannery has reduced 40 per cent pollution of Buriganga River. Now, we have to stop the rest of the 60 per cent pollution of the river,” the minister asserted.  World Rivers Day Coordination Council (WRDCC) read out five proposals and five promises at the programme. World Rivers Day is a celebration of the world's waterways that highlights the many values of our rivers, strives to increase public awareness, and encourages the improved stewardship of all rivers around the world.
