Khulna set Barisal mammoth target

Reigning champions Khulna Division set a comprehensive 402-run target for Barisal Division on the third day of the second round game in the Tier-1 of the Walton National Cricket League (NCL) at the Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium (SANS) in Khulna yesterday. At the Shaheed Kamruzzaman Stadium (SKS), Rajshahi Division put on 147 for one in response to Chittagong Division’s 432. Now the local side has a deficit of 285 runs while only one day left.  Elsewhere at Shaheed Chandu Stadium in Bogra, Rangpur Division got opportunity to bat for only one hour on third day following the call-off of the first two days games. In the top-tier match, Rangpur scored 49 without any loss with Saymon Ahmed batting on 28 and Jahid Javed making 20. The other Tier-2 match between Dhaka Metro and Sylhet Division at the Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium (SKICS) Academy Ground in Cox’s Bazar didn’t roll onto the field due to the overnight rain and wet outfield condition. The match called off without a ball being bowled.

Khulna vs Barisal

Resuming the third day at 171-6, Barisal Division were wrapped up for 258 despite a little bit resistance by Nuruzzaman, who converted his overnight 52 to triple digit marks.

The wickets were tumbling at other end while the centurion was grabbed at one side with sheer resolute and composure.

He finally was unbeaten on 101 off 175 that emblazoned with eight boundaries and three sixes. Monir Hossain, who shone his mettle with his cherry, also struck 30 for Barisal.

Pacer Al Amin Hossain and spinner Abdur Razzak evenly shared eight wickets between them. Al Amin conceded 72 run, while Razzak 90 to claim their respective wickets for Khulna. Mashrafe Bin Mortaza and Mehedi Hasan contributed to the team with one wicket each.

In reply, Khulna Division put on 216 for seven before being declared their second innings following their first innings 444 that helped them throw a stiff target of 402 runs for the visiting side.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Nurul Hasan Sohan stroke 57 and Tushar Imran, who enriched his first class record with scintillating innings, remained not out with 57.

Chasing the challenging target of 402 runs to win, Barisal Division mustered 32 without any loss before the stumps were drawn for the day. Fazle Mahmud Rabbi was batting on 15, while Rafsan Al Mahmud was on 13 not out.

Chittagong vs Rajshahi

Chittagong Division resumed the third day at 419-8 and added just 13 runs with their overnight total at the exchange of remaining two wickets. Kazi Kamrul was the last man, who fell for 44.

Shariful Islam took three wickets for Rajshahi. Saqlain Sajib and Nazmul Hossain Shanto bagged two wickets each.

Rajshahi Division replied well with bat as they compiled 147 for one in 39 overs before the close of the day’s game. Even though Myshukur Rahman got out for 36, captain Jahurul Islam partnered with Nazmul Hossain and hit 44-run for the unbeaten second wicket stand.

Jahurul smashed 119-ball 75, hitting a round dozen boundaries, while Shanto was at stumps on 25.

Imrul Karim grabbed the one-off fallen wicket for Barisal Division.
