The ‘corrupt’ BTEB

Even failed students allegedly get forged certificates from BTEB

Corruption, irregularities and mismanagement seem to have gobbled up the Bangladesh Technical Education Board (BTEB). A probe committee of the education ministry has now found evidence to support the allegations against a ‘syndicate’ in which even the top bosses of the Board are allegedly involved. However, the ministry is yet to take stern action against these officials. We call for taking immediate action against the culprits for whom the BTEB lost its institutional integrity.

When the government is showing repeated commitment in popularising technical education throughout the country, it is too sad that a handful of corrupt officials have indulged in making money via exploiting the country’s highest technical education authority. The allegation, more specifically, is about handing-out of certificates in exchange of kickbacks. Not that the vice is a new phenomenon, but it has been continuing for too long now.

At least 15 Secondary School Certificate (vocational) students of 2016 allegedly obtained certificates without even taking the examinations. This has been possible reportedly due to the patronisation of the syndicate. Moreover, every year, the syndicate members allegedly get some fake students registered in Class IX. These names are changed after two years when the final examinations are held. The names are replaced with those of candidates.

Even failed students allegedly get forged certificates. The syndicate allegedly erases the data from the computer to hide the forgery. The education ministry is reported to have first-hand evidence supporting these allegations. Additionally, the probe committee report also pointed out that the BTEB secretary did not perform his duties well. The report also held BTEB chairman responsible for utter negligence of duties and nepotism.

Now that the criminal methods have been discovered, the need of the hour is to address them one by one, locate the culprits involved and bring about quick changes by replacing them with honest and efficient individuals. Most importantly, the corrupt officials should be handed with exemplary punishments for stopping repetition of malpractices in our education sector in general.

Last of all, we expect the BTEB to be more dutiful and actively supervise and coordinate its administrative activities and the registration process. It should make its operations more transparent and be accountable for all its actions.
