5 prison guards suspended over drug link in Gazipur
Five prison guards of Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur have been suspended on charge of taking and peddling drugs.
The suspended guards are Azizar Rahman, Rakibul Islam, Al Mamun, Majnu Miah and Mostakin.
Tipped off that Azizar was involved in taking yaba and selling the contraband pills, the law enforcers searched his body on Thursday and recovered 600 yaba tablets, said senior jail super Mizanur Rahman.
Later, he was suspended and handed over to police, Mizanur said, adding that a case was filed against him with Joydevpur Police Station.
Later, the jail authorities suspended the four guards.
Five of a family injured in gas oven blast
Five members of a family sustained burn injuries in a fire caused by a gas oven blast in the capital’s Shyampur area Friday.
The injured are Md Enayet, 40, his wife Marium Begum, 35, and their three children—Anny, 5, Habiba, 3, and Jubayer, 2. Inspector Farhaduzzaman, a duty officer at Fire Service central control room, said the explosion took place around 3:40am at a house near Shyampur Balurmath, leaving the five injured.
Later, they were taken to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said officer-in-charge of Kadamtali Police Station Abdul Jalil.
Constable held with yaba
Detective Branch (DB) of Police in a drive arrested three people, including a police constable, along with 452 pieces of yaba tablets from a guest house at Rupatali area in Barisal city on Friday night.
The arrestees were identified as Shaiful Islam, a constable of Barisal Metropolitan Police and son of Shahjahan Siraj of Choramaddhi area in Bakerganj upazila of the district, Kamrul Islam Takuldar and Jahidul Islam.
The details about Kamrul and Jahidul could not be known. Satyaranjan Khashkel, second -officer of Kotwali Model Police Station, said the detective police conducted a drive led by SI of Detective Branch Delwar at Ozupadi Guest House in the area and arrested them.
Later, the DB men recovered 452 pieces of Yaba tablets from their possession.
55 pedestrians fined for not using footbridges
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) conducted a mobile court and fined 55 pedestrians Tk 5,500 for not using footbridges for crossing road at Kakoli crossing of Banani in the capital on Thursday.
DMP Executive Magistrate Mashiur Rahman led the mobile court from 11am.
DMP Deputy Commissioner (Traffic-North) Prabir Kumar Roy said the initiative was taken to raise awareness among the pedestrians about using footbridges to cross the roads instead of risking their lives.
Mobile court activities will further be intensified at every important point under the Traffic North Division in future to encourage pedestrians in this regard.
Eid Ananda Mela with street children in Gazipur
More than one hundreds of street children got meals in a programme titled ‘Eid Ananda Mela’ held at a restaurant at Gazipur town on Friday.
The programme was jointly organised by a facebook group “Hridoyer Joto Kotha Likhobo Amra” and a volunteer organisation “Shishur Jonno Amra”. Children from different slums, some from railway station and from streets join this programme. About 30 people from both organisations join and enjoyed the moment with those street children by serving high quality food, feeding food served by children, taking group photos and selfies.
