Interview
I have been a regular subscriber of the Weekend Independent for a long time now. I was going through the magazine and came across the interview ‘In conversation with Kownine Shourov’ by Nazmus Saquib and I found the interview to be an interesting read. I always had a wrong idea about people who work in the media, that they do not have time for anything else beside their work. I am motivated to know that interviewee manages time for painting, directing and even writing lyrics. In the interview, one of the questions asked was- What’s your take on tele-drama that distorts our language? I am glad to know that Kownine Shourov and my thoughts are the same. I also believe that language is not a constant thing. It changes with time and location. Nevertheless, if some directors use offensive words in their works or use such language that might be of bad influence to our children. I believe we as parents, if we feel the content is not appropriate for our children, we can simply avoid it. In many countries of the world, there are rating for soap operas, so that audiences can understand what type of content the show is offering and it’s appropriate for what age group. I do believe we need to have more talks on this particular matter.

Positive Changes
I have been reading Weekend Independent for last two years or so. Recently I have noticed some changes that have been made, which I believe has made the magazine an easier and more interesting read. I am used to reading travel related articles, interviews, etc as well. 7th August was the death anniversary of Bengali polymath Rabindranath Tagore and an article titled ‘Rabindranath Tagore and His Contemporary Relevance’ has been published on the last issue of Weekend Independent. As I am an avid fan of Rabindranath Tagore , the article gave me some information regarding the poet which was unknown to me earlier. I would like to thank Weekend Independent for publishing such an informative article.

Women at Work
I would like to thank the Weekend Independent for an outstanding article about women and work, written last week by Naima Nuren Khan. As a recent graduate and in my mid 20’s, the family has been putting immense pressure on me to get married. I had the aim to start my career but I came across many people who said that since I will be getting married, there is no need for me to work! That concept is just flabbergasting to me. We are living in times where financial responsibilities are shared among couples and many women do not just want to depend on their husband for their financial needs. Just like the article states, managing both work and family life can prove to be very challenging for many and understandably so. But it does not mean that people should have the notion that if a woman gets married, she should not work. I could relate with the article and it was truly a great read. I hope the magazine comes up with more such pieces.
