One killed in road accident

A motorcyclist was killed in a road accident at Nawapara Bus Stand on Jessore-Khulna Highway in Abhaynagar upazila on Thursday afternoon.

Police said Raju Sheikh, 36, son of late Tasir Uddin, hailing from Khulna district, was going to his home riding a motorcycle.

When Raju reached Nawapara Bus Stand, a speeding truck knocked the motorcycle down, leaving him dead on the spot, said officer-in-charge of Nawapara Highway Police Station Ataur Rahman.

On information, police recovered the body and seized the killer truck, said the OC adding the driver and helper managed to flee.

A case was filed.

2 siblings drown in Jhenidah

Two children met with tragic end of their lives after drowning in a pond in Maheshpur upazila of the district yesterday, reports BSS.

The victims were identified as Madhuri, 09 and her brother Mahabub, 06.

They were the residents in Hamidpur area of Maheshpur municipality.

Police said the incident occurred this afternoon when Madudhuri and Mahabub were playing on the bank of a pond close to their house. Mahabub fell into the pond and drowned, his sister Madhuri drowned as she went to rescue Mahabub.

Local people rescued Madhuri and Mahabub and sent them to Maheshpur Upazila Health Complex where the duty doctor declared them dead.

4 arrested with yaba, liquor

Four people were arrested with 400 pieces of yaba tablets and 50 bottles of home-made wine in two separate drives in Chapainawabganj sadar and Shibganj upazilas of Chapainwabganj.

The arrestees are Doel Ali, 25, of Uparjagannathpur village in Shibganj upazila, Bishu, 32, of the same area and his brother M Ali, 20, and Aktarul, 32, of Baroghoria in Chapainawabganj sadar upazila.

Police sources said on secret information, a team of police from Shibganj police station raided Atrashia village in Shibganj upazila around 3pm on Thursday and arrested Doel, Bishu and M Ali with 400 pieces of yaba tablets.

Meanwhile, a team of police of Detective Branch (DB) in a drive in Nayagola Ghatpara area in Sadar upazila arrested Aktarul with 50 bottles of locally-made wine yesterday morning.

Two separate cases were filed with the concerned police stations.

‘In-laws’ set fire to woman for dowry in Chuadanga

Chuadanga: A housewife suffered severe burn injures as her in-laws allegedly set fire to her for dowry at Roakuli village in Alamdanga upazila on Thursday, reports UNB.

The victim was identified as Arifa Khatun Mita, 23, wife of Khalid Hasan Sumon, a BGB member of the village.

Quoting locals, officer-in-charge of Alamdanga Police Station Akbar Hossian said Sumon married Arifa, daughter of Kitab Ali of Chitla village in the upazila two years back.

Since then, Sumon had been demanding Tk 3 lakh and gold ornaments as dowry.

Victim’s father Kitab Ali said Mita’s in-laws often tortured her as well for the dowry. On Thursday morning, they reportedly set her on fire after pouring kerosene on her body in presence of Sumon, leaving her critically injured.

She was taken to Sadar Hospital first with 60 percent burn injuries, and then moved to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Thousands suffer for awful state of road in Sunamganj

Sunamganj: Several thousand commuters of Chilaura village have been suffering due to awful condition of Jagannatpur-Chilaura road in Jagannathpur upazila, reports UNB.

Almost one kilometer road stretching from Madsasha point to Chilaura village went under floodwater and become unfit for use, causing immense sufferings to the residents of the village.

During a recent visit to the village, this correspondent found that a big portion of the road, the lone kutcha road for the villagers, went under water while the rest part of the road has become risky.

Despite of having a road, local people are being compelled to use boat for going to their destinations.

Villagers alleged that the local representatives don’t pay any heed to the demand of the villagers to construct the road.

Babul Mahmud, a panel chairman of Chilaura-Haldipur union, said “We have requested the authorities concerned to fill up the potholes with mud on emergency basis and make the road fit for use.”

28 arrested in Dinajpur

DINAJPUR: Police, in special drives from Thursday night to this morning, arrested 28 persons, including four drug traders, from eight upazilas of the district, reports BSS.

Sources with the district police said the law enforcers during the same period recovered banned drugs comprising 219 bottles of Phensidyl and 118 pieces of Yaba tablets.

The sources said, during the drives, Dinajpur Sadar police arrested 10 persons, Khansama police one, Hakimpur police three persons, including two drug traders, Birampur police two, Birganj police three, Phulbari police five, Parbatipur police two drug traders, and Kaharole police two persons.

Several cases, including charges of subversive activities, are pending with different police stations against the arrested persons, the sources added.

The arrested people were sent to jail.
