Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called upon the OIC member states to show a unity for solving the Rohingya crisis before it worsens further. She also placed a number of proposals before the OIC, including full implementation of the recommendations made by the Kofi Annan Commission. Indisputably, she couldn’t have been more astute, bold and farsighted. Even though, Bangladesh isn’t the only country where Rohingyas have taken shelter, but it is the only country that is bearing the brunt of this crisis. Sharing its border with Myanmar, Bangladesh has sheltered nearly half a million Rohingya refugees officially and the unofficial number crosses over a million.
Mentioning the crisis to have its root in Myanmar, she has rightly pointed out that its solution has to be found in that country. Additionally, she called for ending the evils of ethnic cleansing. Other than just restricting the scope of her speech within the current crisis, she has went a step further and made a humanitarian call to be taken very seriously in today’s diversified but volatile world by standing beside all ethnic minorities scattered across the globe. She invited the leaders of OIC member states to visit Bangladesh and pay heed to the plight of the Rohingyas and how they fled the persecution in Myanmar.
Muslim population all over the world now wait to see prompt and sincere response from the OIC member states. All of them are well aware about the reprehensible military crackdowns on the minority Rohingya community in Myanmar, and many of them have sent food and medical aid besides contributing monetarily. But money and aid do not end a crisis. These are mere stopgap measures to ease the sufferings of victims.
Perceiving the gravity of the situation, it’s time the OIC members put pressure on Myanmar government to take back the refugees and rehabilitate them accordingly responding to Sheikh Hasina’s speech. Moreover, if steps are not taken quickly, the ever deteriorating situation may result in a long-term disaster while risking war-like situations between neighbouring countries. The issue could well destroy the geopolitical stability of the South-Asian region.
The OIC member states need to get actively engaged fast for finding and implementing a sensible solution to end the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar and else around.
