The Ministry of Science and Technology’s Extremely Small Population Species Investigation Project is cooperating with the National Basic Research Project. Together, they funded an investigative team from the Ministry of Science and Technology led by researcher Qiu Yingxiong. The group discovered a population of extremely endangered Dipteronia dyeriana—a nationally protected plant—on a field search in Malipo County, Wenshan Prefecture.
Dipteronia dyeriana is rare plant unique to China. It is extremely endangered. The fossils of its ancestral group are documented in the United States. In 1933, the famous Chinese botanist Cai Xitao discovered and collected the first ever specimen in Wenshan. Now, a new small population of Dipteronia dyeriana has been discovered in Malipo County, providing material basis for more scientific research by domestic and international experts and scholars.
The recently discovered wild population of Dipteronia dyeriana consists of 20 plants of varied sizes. The smallest of them is 4.6 centimetres in diameter, while the largest has a diameter of 12 centimetres. The latter is the largest such plant ever discovered.
