On September 7, Yang Jiahua drove to work after lunch. More than 20 minutes later, she crossed into Zhilan Village in Luquan County and came Shuanghua Hope Primary School at the foot of a mountain. She is a young English teacher at the school. “It was my dream to become an English teacher, but teaching primary school students in the countryside wasn’t necessarily my plan. However, I’m doing it and I’m doing it quite well,” Yang Jiahua said.
With the rapid advance of targeted poverty alleviation efforts in 2016, 5,310 students received subsidies totalling 8.12 million yuan. Meanwhile, the treatment of teachers has also significantly improved. Yang Jiahua is a young teacher at the school. Her monthly salary is about 7,000 yuan per month. She also receives a year-end bonus.
“These favourable policies have made me decide to stay. Now I have settled down and take delight in teaching,” Yang Jiahua explained.
According to an official at the Luquan County Education Bureau, living subsidies for area teachers is an effective measure to make the job of rural teachers more attractive, and simultaneously boost the balanced development of compulsory education while promoting educational equality. Starting from 2016, Luquan County has provided rural teachers with subsidies ranging from 500 yuan to 1,500 yuan depending on how far the school is from their homes. Other considerations include local living conditions and the degree of difficulty in living there.
