Abdur Rahman Badi, controversial lawmaker of ruling Awami League from Cox’s Bazar-4 (Ukhia) constituency, ‘assaulted’ a government engineer yesterday.
Badi allegedly assaulted Ukhia Upazila Engineer Mustafa Minhaz in his office for being late in attending the monthly meeting of the upazila committee.
Sources at the upazila administration said Badi attended the meeting of the committee, where the engineer holds the position of member secretary. After reaching the meeting venue, the lawmaker inquired about the engineer. When he learnt that the engineer was coming to attend the meeting with Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Hillol Biswas, he became angry at the engineer for being late. Badi verbally abused the engineer before beating him up, said sources. The UNO confirmed the incident.
Present at the meeting, Ukhia Upazila Awami League General Secretary Jahangir Kabir Chowdhury, also the chairman of Razapalong union, termed the incident to be a mere ‘misunderstanding’.
Contacted, Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner said he heard about the incident and termed it ‘shocking’.
The lawmaker, who had allegedly beaten up teachers, lawyers, government and non-government officials before, could not be contacted over phone despite repeated attempts.
