UNB

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and South Korea have announced funds for Rohingyas who are currently in Bangladesh fleeing persecution in Rakhine State of Myanmar, reports UNB.

Saudi King Salman has ordered payment of $15 million while South Korea pledged aid worth $ 1.5 million for emergency relief operation for the Rohingyas.

Dr Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al-Rabiah, general supervisor of Riyadh-based King Salman Center for Relief and Humanitarian Aid, told Saudi Press Agency (SPA) following a meeting of the Saudi Cabinet, which was briefed on the situation in Myanmar, said a report of The Arab News.

The Saudi Cabinet renewed the Kingdom’s calls on the international community to take urgent action to stop the attacks and to allow the Myanmar Muslim minority their basic human rights.

Rohingya Muslims have lived in Myanmar for generations, but have recently been forced to flee as they are attacked in their homes, following a succession of attacks carried out by Muslim militants in August.

Security forces and allied mobs carried out retaliation attacks, burning down the homes of thousands of Rohingya Muslims, forcing 417,000 people to flee to neighboring Bangladesh, said the report.

Meanwhile, in response to the recent influx, on behalf of the Korean government, Ahn Seong-doo, Ambassador of South Korea to Bangladesh, has announced that the donation will be given through International Organization for Migration (IOM). Ambassador Ahn said, "I hope this assistance would contribute to lessening the suffering of refugees who recently fled in the wake of the latest violence in the Rakhine state and improving their living conditions."

The Republic of Korea has expressed deep concerns over the latest violence in the Rahkine state and the ensuing influx of refugees into Bangladesh. It has also made clear its support for all the international efforts, including Bangladesh's, to help the refugees.

The South Korea will continue to closely cooperate with the international community, including Bangladesh and the Myanmar government, to solve this issue, according to Korean Embassy in Dhaka.
