Newsmen stage hunger strike for new wage board

BSS

Journalists yesterday staged a day-long hunger strike as part of their protests against the delay in constituting the proposed 9th Wage Board, reports BSS.

A large number of newsmen representing the mainstream media took part in the strike at the Jatiya Press Club auditorium where leaders of the profession accused the information ministry and the minister in particular delaying the process.

Elderly journalist Kamal Lohani, former president of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and Managing Director and Chief Editor of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Abul Kalam Azad and former President of Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) Kazi Rafique broke the protestors' hunger offering them fruit juices.

"The 8th wage board was declared on September 22, 2013 . . . the journalists became victim of discrimination when the national pay-scale was announced in 2015," BFUJ President Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul told the demonstration.
