Bangladesh believes that actions with regard to mitigate Rohingya crisis created by Myanmar is much more important than words.
“As they spoke after three-four weeks, there might be some effect. But, I don’t think the pressure will lessen due to the speech,” state minister for foreign affairs Shahriar Alam told reporters yesterday when asked about Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s speech on the Rohingya crisis.
“Doing something about it is much more important than giving statements,” he said.
This has been the first reaction from the foreign ministry after Suu Kyi’s speech on Tuesday about the crisis created by the atrocities orchestrated by the Myanmar security forces. The brutal offensive by the Myanmar forces killed hundreds of Rohingyas and forced more than 4 lakh Rohingyas to flee into Bangladesh.
To a question, the state minister said that he believes that there have been some changes with regard to the attitude of China and India in relations to the Rohingya crisis.
“Both the countries (China and India) have said that Bangladesh and Myanmar are their friendly countries and they will do whatever they can. They have given the message clearly,” he said. “We see some indications of that. So, I think there’s some change,” he added.
Meanwhile, China has pledged to continue proving necessary support to Myanmar to ‘uphold its internal stability and development’.
“We have noted the address just delivered by Myanmar State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi at noon, which we hope will help the international community to better know about the situation in Myanmar and understand and support the Myanmar government’s effort to achieve domestic peace and national reconciliation,” Lu Kang, spokesperson of the Chinese foreign ministry, told a regular briefing on Tuesday.
“As a friendly neighbor of Myanmar, the Chinese side will continue providing necessary assistance for it to uphold internal stability and development,” he said.
