Sometimes when you make anime or theme-based movies quite similar to something that has become quite popular already, people tend to call it a “rip-off”. And with the anime Tokyo ESP, many viewers have called it an X-Men rip-off. The theme here being Espers which is quite similar to Mutants even show the same power as the mutants in X-Men.
In the beginning the anime shows how Urushiba Rinka, the female protagonist, acquires her powers. Rinka, a very normal high school girl, has her own problems being poor and trying to manage for her and her fathers’ living by working part time. One day, she sees golden fish flying through the sky. At first, she thinks she is hallucinating but, then one of the golden fish goes right through her body which gives birth to her esper powers. Then she encounters situations which desperately need her powers and while fighting bad espers, she is helped by the good espers. Well that pretty much seems up the details inside the anime which is the usual way of showing anime containing superpowers. The character design has been good but, there is hardly any character development. To put it into words, you keep waiting for something extraordinary or something creative to happen in the anime but, it just does not. The whole part of showing good romance is ruined by the naïve attitude of the director while the opening and ending songs along with the background theme is pretty average to say the least. And by the time you reach the last episode you are sure to be filled with disappointment from watching the anime.
