Ex-UP member hacked dead
Pabna: Former member of a union parishad was hacked to death by miscreants at Shibpur village in Atgharia upazila on Tuesday night, reports UNB.
The deceased was identified as Abu Daud, 45, son of late Latif Munshi and former member of Ward No 8 in Ekdanta union of the upazila.
Anwarul Islam, officer-in-charge of Atgharia Police Station, said victim’s family members said Abu Daud was returning home from Shibpur Bazar around 10.30 pm.
When he reached bridge area, miscreants swooped on him with sharp weapons and fled the scene, leaving him injured critically.
Hearing his screaming, locals rushed to the spot and took the injured to Pabna General Hospital where duty doctor declared him dead.
On information, police sent the body to morgue for an autopsy.
Investigation is going on to trace the killers, OC Anwar said, adding that the motive behind the killing is not known yet.
The process is underway to file a murder case.

Two killed in road accident

Two people, including a woman, were killed and three others injured as a bus collided head-on with a private car on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway near local Passport Office in Sadar upazila on Tuesday afternoon.
The deceased were Amena Khatun, 60, and Ripon Miah, 28, residents of Nabinagar in Brahmanbaria district.
Officer-in-charge of Sadar Model Police Station Golam Mustafa said the accident occurred in the area at about 4.30 pm when a Bhoirab-bound bus collided head-on with the car, leaving two car passengers dead on the spot and three others injured.
The injured were sent to Narsingdi General Hospital.

Tree fair begins in Jamalpur

A week-long tree fair began at Boishakhi Mela field in the town yesterday.
Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Land Rezaul Karim Hira inaugurated the fair as the chief guest in the morning.
He said “We should plant more fruit-bearing trees to save our environment and to meet the required nutrition of people.”
Chaired by Deputy Commissioner Ahmed Kabir, the event was addressed, among others, by Mayor of Jamalpur municipality Mirza Shakhawatul Alam Mony, Additional Superintendent of Police Rawnak Jahan, Deputy Director of Department of Agricultural Extension Md Abu Hanif, Assistant Conservative of Forest Prantush Roy and Vice-President of district unit of Awami League Syed Atiqur Rahman Sana.
Earlier, the chief guest distributed 500 Thai guava plants among students.
A total of 35 stalls of various trees were set up on the fair premises.
