Turag River erosion took a serious turn at different places in Bhakurta union of Savar upazila as the illegal sand lifters hoisted sand from the river for housing project in the area, reports UNB.
Increasing water level of the river and illegal sand lifting are the main causes behind the heavy erosion seen in different parts of the area, as identified by locals and experts alike.
Already a connecting bridge of the area and at least 25 houses went under water. Road communication with Keraniganj, Nowabganj, Dohar and Mohammadpur from Bhakurta is completely halted as the connecting bridge has become unusable.
Local residents and the students of different educational institutions of the area suffered much following the collapse. Passengers’ and emergency goods transportation remains stopped.
The locals staged a demonstration against the sand lifters and land grabbers to protect the Turag from erosion.
They demanded the local administration rebuild the collapsed bridge immediately and the road communication with Keraniganj and Mohammadpur from Bhakurta will be normal soon.
Local residents Moktar Hossain, Ashraf, Momen among others said to UNB that there were 30 villages in Bhakurta union. There were at least 1 lakh residents in the area.
They said a road from Bhakurta was going through Shamlashi and Totalia area of the river bank and connecting Mohammadpur, Keraniganj, Dohar and Nawabganj.
In recent times, the land-grabbers started sand lifting from the river for a housing project in the area.
The Turag narrowed day by day as the grabbers took south bank of the river and filled with sand from the river for housing project. The locals demanded that the administration should take action against the illegal grabbers.
The Turag bailey bridge becomes risky for road transportation for the same reasons. The drivers fear that this bridge will collapse and go into the river.
Thousands of vehicles move on the Turag bailey bridge in 24 hrs.
Anower Hossain, chairman of Bhakurta union parishad, has already urged the local authority to evacuate the illegal land grabbers from the banks of the river.
He said the riverbank was illegally grabbed day by day. Erosion took a serious turn as the lifter hoisted sand from the river.
He also said the land grabbers make lots of money illegally by grabbing the bank of a river for housing projects. They would sell on the plot for the project and make that money.
Dhiren Kumar Debnath, Savar Upazila Engineer of Local Government Engineering Department, said the collapsed connecting bridge will be repaired as soon as possible. After that the road communication through the bridge will be normal.
He said we should take legal action against the constructors and land grabbers.
