‘Obeying traffic rules can reduce road accidents’

RANGPUR: Professional awareness of drivers and their assistants along with sincere driving and obeying vehicular traffic rules can reduce road accidents to save thousands of lives annually in the country, reports BSS.

The observations came at a views-sharing meeting cum training workshop organised by the District Police Administration at Police Community hall here yesterday to reduce road accidents. Police Super Mizanur Rahman as the chief guest attended the event participated by over 350 drivers of different types of vehicles and their assistants.

Additional Police Supers Fazle Elahi, ABM Zakir Hossain and Saifur Rahman, Inspector of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) Nurus Safa, Traffic Inspector Mizanur Fahami, Member-secretary of District Community Policing Coordination Committee Shushanto Bhowmick addressed. Leaders of the district units of Awami Motor Drivers’ League, Motor Workers’ Union, Truck, Tank-lorry and Covered Van Workers’ Union, also spoke.

The speakers blamed inefficiency of some drivers and their assistants, violation of Vehicular Act and Traffic Rules, overlooking signals, using mobile phones while driving and overtaking as major reasons behind road accidents.

They said hundreds of people, including women and children, are dying from road accidents with thousands of others injured and many of them becoming physically handicapped annually in the country. They laid emphasis on ensuring professional training of vehicle drivers and their assistants, appropriately issuance of driving licenses and obeying traffic rules by all concerned to avoid accidents.

The chief guest suggested vehicle drivers and their assistants to know reasons behind road accidents for behaving accordingly to reduce road accidents by ensuring better and sincere driving of vehicles on the roads and highways.

He put special importance on enhancing professional skill of drivers, their assistants and transport workers and obeying traffic rules while driving vehicles to reduce the extent of road accidents.
