Academic council of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (Ruet) on Wednesday suspended all academic activities of the 2nd year in the face of students’ movement for withdrawal of new ‘credit system’ of examinations.
The decision was taken after the students declined to respond to the teachers’ call for attending classes and continued their ‘illogical’ movement, Vice Chancellor of Ruet Prof Rafiqul Alam Beg told this correspondent. The students continued their movement and threatened tougher programme if the authorities did not start classes within three days, students said at a press conference.
Saifur Rahman, on behalf of the students, spoke at the press conference held at a classroom.
Some 50 students attempted several times in the morning to go to the administrative building to raise protest, but they failed due to deployment of huge number of policemen on the campus. They held a protest rally and brought out a procession on the campus later.
The RUET 2nd year students launched the movement on Tuesday demanding withdrawal of the “credit system” in which, the authorities made it mandatory for students to earn at least 33 credits, out of 40, in a year to be promoted to the following year. Earlier, the students were allowed to be promoted to higher classes thought they came out unsuccessful in examinations of several subjects.
