Father, 3 sons get life for murder

A court in Tangail yesterday sentenced four people to life term imprisonment for killing a man at Panch Elasin village in Delduar upazila of Tangail district in 2015.

District and Session Judge Rabiul Hasan handed down the verdict against Sagor Miah, 60, and his three sons-Ersad Miah, 28, Rased Miah, 26, and Monirul Islam, 22.

The court also fined them Tk one lakh, in default, to suffer one more year of rigorous imprisonment.

According to the prosecution, the convicted people killed their neighbour Majnu Miah, 35, over a disputed land on July 18, 2015.

After the incident, victim’s wife filed a case with Delduar police station against the four.

Police, after investigation, submitted charge sheet before the court against them.

Gunmen fire shots piercing Bangabadhu’s image

Narsingdi: Four gunmen fired shots piercing the image of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman hung at Narsingdi railway stationmaster’s chamber, reports UNB.

Golam Mostafa, officer-in-charge of Narsingdi Sadar Police Station, said a gang of four criminals with foreign and locally-made firearms entered the Narsingdi railway station around 8:45 am and started searching station’s security guard Humayun Kabir.

Having failed to find him, they entered the stationmaster’s chamber and fired gunshots at the image of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and fled the scene, threatening another security guard. Stationmaster Muhidur Rahman was in his seat when the criminals fired shots, the OC said adding,

“The criminals will be identified soon using the CCTV footage.”

College girl’s body recovered

Police recovered the body of a college student from a paddy field at Bhelay village in Ranisankail upazila on Sunday.

The deceased was Mukta Akhtar, 21, an Honours first year student of Pirganj Government College and daughter of Tofazzul Haque of the village.

Family members said Mukta left home on Saturday morning. Her family members became worried as she did not come back till late at night.

On Sunday morning the locals spotted the body in a paddy field near the home and informed the family members. Later on information police recovered the body.

Abdul Mannan, officer-in-charge of Ranisankail Station, confirmed the incident and said police would arrest those involved after filing a case.

Tofazzul Haque suspects that his sister’s two sons, Shohag and Shobuj, and Milon of Beelpar village might be involved in the killing of Mukta.

Hilsa fest kicks off in Chandpur

The weeklong ‘9th Chaturanga Hilsa Festival-2017’ began amid enthusiasm at the Shipakola Academy premises in Chandpur town on Sunday.

Chaturanga, a leading cultural organization, has organised this fest. A colorful rally led by superintendent of district police Shamsunnahar and Municipal Mayor Nasiruddin Ahmed marched through different streets of the district town during this festival.

Later, the festival was formally inaugurated by Nasiruddin Ahmed while Police Super Shamsunnahar was the chief guest at the Shilpakola Academy.
