Call to prevent child marriage

RANGPUR: Youths, adolescents and journalists at a dialogue yesterday pledged to prevent child marriage that shatters life of premature girl children and pave the way for flourishing their talent and leadership, reports BSS.

Press Club, Rangpur (PCR) organised the 'Youth-Journalist Dialogue' on proper implementation of the Child Marriage Restraint Act 2017 at its auditorium in the city.

LAMB extended assistance in arranging the dialogue under its Girls' Advocacy Alliance Project being financed by Plan International Bangladesh. Students, adolescents and youths working for preventing child marriage and local journalists participated in the event presided over by PCR President Sadrul Alam Dulu. General Secretary of PCR Rashid Babu addressed the dialogue as invited guest while Divisional Coordinator of Bangladesh National Women Lawyers' Association Advocate Kohinoor Begum participated as main resource person.

Divisional Coordinator of LAMB Rehana Begum narrated objectives of the dialogue and necessity of creating network of all stakeholders to ensure proper implementation of the Act.

In her presentation, Advocate Kohinoor Begum discussed about different aspects of the Child Marriage Restraint Act 2017 and its implementation process.

She stressed on a creating a network involving adolescents, youths, government and NGO officials, public representatives, religious leaders, marriage registrars, human rights activists and journalists for proper implementation of the Act.

Participating youths and adolescents Misty Khatun, Nazmin Nahar, Nayan Moni, Chandona Roy, Ankhi and Razzaque narrated experiences they gathered while stopping a number of child marriages in rural areas. They called for building a society free from early marriage that also leads premature girls to shattered lives hindering their education, destroying future and causing neonatal, maternal and child deaths.
