Different cultural platforms, Univwersity teachers yesterday and on Sunday formed separate human chains in front of Jatiya Press Club in the capital and Rajshahi city protesting Rohingya persecution in Myanmar, reports UNB.
In Dhaka, leaders and activists of 18 platforms of artistes participated in the human chain protesting military offensive against Rohingya people, who were forced to cross into Bangladesh.
Convenor of Cholochitra Paribar and eminent Actor Faruq, noted film producer Amzad Hossain, President of Film Directors Association Mushfiqur Rahman Gulzar, Secretary General Badiul Alam Khokon, President of Film Industry Association Misha Saudagar, General Secretary actor Jayed Khan, Film Director Wahiduzzaman, actors Riaz and Ferdous and actresses Sujata, Anjana and Nutun, among others, joined the human chain.
The artistes and cultural personalities described the ongoing violence on Rohingyas as violation of human rights and crime against humanity. They called on the government of Myanmar to stop military attack on Rohingya.
Actor Faruq criticised the role of de facto head of Myanmar government Aung San Suu Kyi in atrocities of Rohingya, saying she does not deserve the Nobel Peace Prize. Other leaders said the global community lauded the role of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as Bangladesh has given shelter to a large number of Rohingya people. They called for raising global consciousness to mount pressure on Myanmar for ending the military offensive against Rohingya people.
Our Rajshahi University correspondent adds: The teachers, students and officials of Rajshahi University (RU) protested the repression, persecution and the killing of Rohingya minority at Rakhain state in Myanmar by holding demonstration and human chain under different banners on the campus.
The RU unit Progressive Teachers Society (PTS), a platform of Pro-Awami teachers, led by convener Prof Rakib Ahmed staged a demonstration yesterday in front of the university Senate Bhaban while RU pro vice chancellor Prof Dr Ananda Kumar Shaha, Student Adviser Prof Dr Jannatul Ferdaus, Bangla Dept Prof Dr Sojit Sarkar, Law dept Prof Dr Hasibul Alam, among others, addressed the programme.
On the other hand, RU unit Jatiyatabadi Teachers Forum, a platform of Pro-BNP teachers, brought out silent procession. RU unit president Prof DR KBM Mahbubur Rahman presided over the programme where Phycology dept Prof Dr Enamul Haque, Chemistry dept Prof Dr CM Mostofa, Arabic Dept Prof Dr Iftekahyer Aalm Masud, among others, were present there.
However, the students of RU from different departments and institutions under the General Student banner wearing black bands formed a human chain protesting the incident,
RU Economics Dept 4th year student Nazmus Sakib presided over the programme while Political Science same year student Naeem Hossain conducted it where Shaheed Suhrawardy Hall unit debating Patsala president Omar Faruk, Economics dept student Jabedul Islam Moni, Jewel Mamun, among others, addressed.
Speakers of the programme urged to the Myanmar government to stop the persecution, repression and killing of the Muslim Rohinyga ethnic minority of the country. They also requested to United Nation leaders to come forward and to take proper steps for resolving the ongoing Rohinga crisis immediately. UNB adds: A section of teachers of Dhaka University formed a human chain at the foot of Aparajeyo Bangla of Dhaka University (DU) on Sunday protesting the repression on the Rohingyas by the Myanmar authorities and demanding the government move to send them back to their country.
Some 60 teachers took part in the one hour long human chain programme, organised by DU pro-BNP-Jamaat teachers panel.
DU white panel convener Prof Akhter Hossain Khan, former convener Prof Sadrul Amin, white panel joint Convener Prof Morshed Hasan Khan, DU Senate members ABM Obaidul Islam, Pali and Buddhist Studies former chairman Prof Shukomol Barua were, among others, addressed the programme. Addressing the programme, Prof Akhter Hossain Khan said, Its the time for Bangladesh to get united against Myanmars genocide and it is very shocking that India, China and Russia support the Myanmar Armys mass killing.
