Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid yesterday underscored the need for technical education to build up the future generation as skilled manpower.
He said that the government is committed to set up technical school in each upazila to impart education for building skilled manpower.
The minister said this at a seminar held at the Directorate of the Technical Education (DTE) in the city.
He also said the government has already approved a project to build up technical schools in 100 upazilas across the country.
The minister urged the new generation to make themselves as the real manpower through technical education instead of being unemployed through traditional education.
He said when the ruling Awami League came to power, less than one per cent students used to get admitted to technical education.
Now the rate of admission to technical education has increased by 10 per cent after taking various initiatives in this regard, he said.
The minister also said the government has taken extensive steps to increase the admission rate at 20 per cent by 2020.
He said one lakh new students are going to take admission to government polytechnic institutes this year. He hopes that the number of students will cross two lakh in the 49 public polytechnic institutes.
He said new departments like Solar Technology, Media, Plastic Industry, Tourism and Food Processing are being opened to attract young generations.
