Govt’s political stance over Rohingya not clear, says BNP

UNB

BNP standing committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on Saturday alleged that the government's political stance is not clear on Rohingya issue, reports UNB.

“The entrance of Rohingyas into Bangladesh is an indirect attack on our sovereignty. Though Bangladesh is directly affected by the Rohingya problem, the government's political position on the issue is not clear,” he said.

The BNP leader came up with the remarks while speaking at debate a session on “The role of world leaders in resolving Rohingya crisis' arranged by Debate for Democracy at Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) at Tejgaon.

He said the government had pushed back the Rohingyas at the initial stage saying they have involvement in drug trafficking and branding them as terrorists.

Mahmud also said the government even obstinately supported Myanmar by offering to conduct a joint operation along the border.

He said though the government later changed its stance, it has still failed to clear its role over the issue.

The BNP leader opposed the proposal for creating a safe zone for Rohingyas, saying if it is implemented Rohingyas will be treated as refugees in their own county losing their human dignity and citizenship right.

He said necessary steps should be taken to stop persecution on Rohingyas and mount pressure on Myanmar to take them back.
