The Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad and Chairperson of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury urged all CPA member-states to work together to ensure democratic norms, rules of law, equity and sustainable development through the active participation of parliament members, reports BSS.
“CPA is working to ensure welfare of the people, strengthening of the democratic institutions, good governance and transparency among the Commonwealth countries . . . We have taken various pragmatic steps to confirm the participation of young generation,” she said on Tuesday while inaugurating the 46th African regional conference of CPA in Nairobi. Referring to active involvement of lawmakers in budget implementation, she underscored the need for ensuring the power of parliament, its accountability and surveillance of all parliament members in all public accounts.
The speaker said all members of parliament must increase the usage of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to gear up their work-speed in the field of legislation. Dr Chaudhury also called upon all members to work unitedly to face the negative impact of the climate change, for food security, gender equity, poverty alleviation, health, safe water and sanitation, energy security, world peace and security.
The speakers, deputy speakers and parliament members of 18 countries of African region are also attending the conference.
