Stress on bringing adolescent girls under safety net activities

GAIBANDHA: Speakers at a function here on Wednesday underscored the need for bringing the married adolescent girls under safety net activities through protecting them from all sorts of obstacles, reports BSS.

They opined that cordial support and assistance from the family members and united efforts and coordination of all the stakeholders of the society are very essential to change the socio-economic condition of the married adolescent girls.

They made the comments while addressing a meeting titled ‘Initiative for Married Adolescent Girls’ Employment’ at the auditorium of SKS Inn at Radhakrisnopur, an outskirt of the district town.

SKS Foundation organised the function with the financial support of The Netherlands Government.

Deputy Commissioner Gautam Chandra Pal addressed the meeting as the chief guest and Superintendent of Police M Mashrukur Rahman Khaled and Civil Surgeon Dr Amir Ali were present as special guests.

With M Rajab Ali, head of programme of SKS Foundation, in the chair, the function was also addressed, among others, by deputy director (DD) of Department of Family Planning Dewan Morshed Kamal, DD of Department of Social Services Emdadul Haque Pramanik, Sadar upazila parishad chairman Abdul Karim, UNO Alia Ferdous Zahan, district information officer Sabiha Akter Lucky, and journalist Sarker M Shahiduzzaman.

The speaker emphasised on building social movement about the checking of the early marriage to save the adolescents from different types of difficulties, including their physical problems.

District coordinator of the project Modasseruzzamna Milu said the project was launched at the union in 2014 for 1,397 married adolescent girls.

This year, Monohorpur union of Palashbari upazila was also brought under the project targeting 1,031 girls and it would continue till 2020, he added.
