Mominul Haque rejected the notion that his Test performance was affected as a result of being ignored from the limited overs cricket.
He didn’t play any ODI matches after the ICC Cricket World Cup in Australia-New Zealand this year despite being in the squad.
He played Test matches regularly in between but runs seemed dried up for the diminutive batsman who once is used to accumulate runs in Bardman-esque average.
Mominul made the scores of 30, 6 and 40 in the last three Test matches against India and South Africa at home yard which raised the question whether his Test performance is affected by being ignored into the ODI squad.
“I don’t think so,” he declined adding, “I don’t think it as a pressure. If I take it as a pressure, then only it’s a pressure. Otherwise it’s not a pressure at all.”
His Test average dipped to 54 from a staggering 70, showing how his performance has been nosedived.
“Yes I know I can’t perform well in the last three Tests. But I am working on it and trying hard to get my rhythm back. Hopefully I’ll show an improved performance in the upcoming Test series against Australia,” hoped the batsman who scored 1,456 in 17 Test appearances with four hundreds.
As the Bangladesh got a well-settled line up for the ODI, Mominul’s chances to return to the limited overs cricket looks bleak at the moment.
But he refused to give up the hopes so quickly.
“I believe if I can perform well then I could come back in one-day cricket again. I’ve now been working on those areas where I need to improve,” said Mominul Haque, who played 26 ODIs after making his debut against West Indies in November 2012. “Showcasing my better batting performance, I want to return to the one-day fold,” Mominul told media
Mominul’s favourite two batsmen- Michael Clarke and Kumar Sangakkara have already announced their retirement. Mominul paid a rich tribute to those two modern greats.
“I never play with Australian skipper Michael Clarke. But he is good player no doubt,” he said.
“I saw (Kumar) Sangakkara on my debut, where he was batting for a long-period handling spin and pace bowling equally well,” Cox’s Bazar-born Mominul, who debuted in Test against Sri Lanka at Galle in 2013, revealed.
“I’ve learnt from Sangakkara about the strong mentality that is needed for a player to play Test matches.”
