In only 19 days, 103 Rohingyas refugees have been admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH). Most of them were injured in gunfire and explosions. Two of them died. Medical sources said that 15 Rohingyas have been released from CMCH after treatment. Of them, 10 left the hospital on Monday. Five others left on Tuesday. The rest were handed over to the International Organization of Medicine Sans Frontières (MSF) staff for treatment.
The police left the 15 Rohingyas at the Kutupalong Rohingya camp in Ukhia of Cox’s Bazar district, said sources. Late on Tuesday, seven more refugees, including five with bullet injuries, were brought to the CMCH.
The injured Rohingyas were identified as Md Imam Farid, 16, Shawkat Ullah, 28, Md Taher, 21, Abdul Karim, 19, Mariyam, 10, Md Jahangir Aam, 18, and Md Idris, 28. Of them, Mariyam was injured in a road accident in Teknaf.
Farid, who came from Shitrikkha of Maungdaw district in Rakhine state, got shot in the right leg when the army fired at them. He told The Independent that it was raining bullets. “When I tried to run, I got shot in the leg and fell,” he said.
Abdul Karim, who came from Sairapara in Maungdaw, was shot in the back. “Last Saturday, the army and the police opened fire in our neighbourhood. Our house was set on fire. When I came out of the house, I got shot,” he narrated. “The Myanmar army opened fire on my house. When I got shot, some of my neighbours took me to Teknaf via the Naf river and admitted me to the hospital. I do not know yet where my wives and children are,” said Md Idris, who got admitted to CMCH last night.
Alauddin Talukder, the assistant sub-inspector of Chittagong district police, confirmed that since August 25, when fresh violence broke out in Myanmar, 103 Rohingyas have come to the CMCH for treatment. Two of them died, while 15 left after treatment. The rest were handed over to the MSF staff for treatment.
