Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid on Tuesday said the quality of all textbooks from class six to eight would be improved gradually. This statement is more than welcome. According to a report of this newspaper on Wednesday, the corrected textbooks of class nine and ten will be more interesting and easier to read to the students and quality of the textbooks from class six to eight will be substantially upgraded. Education is the backbone of a nation and the future of a nation greatly depends on how its citizens perform. Since students are the future citizens of the country, their education should be on a solid foundation. But it is disturbing to note that when textbooks are plagued with mistakes and distorted information what will the students learn from those?
What is surprising is that when there is no dearth of writers, educationists and scholars in the country how such mistakes and distortion of facts occurred in school textbooks. Does it not speak of sheer callousness and irresponsibility? The expenses of printing the textbooks are drainage on the state exchequer. Had the persons connected with the writing, editing, printing and publishing the books been cautious, such mistakes would not have occurred. The ministry of education and the education department cannot avoid their responsibility.
Education is one of the basic human rights. This right is enshrined in Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. But how many people do enjoy this right in the country remains a question. The overall scenario in the educational arena in the country does not show that much promise. Alongside corrections of textbooks errors, excluded texts have to be reinstated in the textbooks to uphold the spirit of war of liberation.
Only by receiving the right kind of education a person can explore the job market and get established in professional life. In this way, he/she can improve their economic conditions and contribute to the overall development of the country. The relevant authorities should be alert so that such mistakes do not take place in textbooks in future.
When the government has taken various measures for promoting education in the country, including female education, the school dropout problem is a matter of concern. Quality education eludes the children belonging to underprivileged classes. Many schools in rural areas lack infrastructural facilities and competent teachers, hampering education. Concerted and sustained efforts of all can contribute to quality education in the country.
