Chinese enterprises help improve Dhaka traffic

BY LIU CHUNTAO

Recently, three major transport infrastructure projects in the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka broke ground, and Chinese enterprises are participating in these projects. With the implementation and completion of the projects, the transportation situation in the city is expected to improve over the next few years.

The three major infrastructure projects include the Dhaka Rapid Bus and Transit System, the Dhaka Airport Elevated Expressway and the Dhaka Urban Rail Transit Project. These efforts are being partially or completely undertaken by Chinese enterprises.

The Dhaka Rapid Bus Transit System is being built by China Gezhouba Group. According to an executive from the company’s Number 6 Engineering branch, the rapid bus system will be the first of its kind in Bangladesh. The project will not only improve traffic conditions on the road between Dhaka Airport and Gazipur, but will also promote economic exchanges between the city’s distant areas. It is of great significance for improving Dhaka’s entire transportation situation. Upon completion, the Dhaka Rapid Bus Transit System is expected to carry 20,000 passengers every hour.

The Dhaka Airport Elevated Expressway Project is a joint effort by China Hydropower Construction Group International Engineering Co., Ltd (China Hydropower International) and China Shandong International Economic and Technical Cooperation Group Co., Ltd. The expressway is the first urban road of its type, and as planned by the Bangladeshi government, it will improve congestion conditions in Dhaka. It is also a priority infrastructure project for the Bangladeshi government. The expressway begins at Dhaka International Airport, and runs north to south through the downtown area before connecting with the Dhaka-Chittagong highway.

Light Rail Line 6, the first light rail line in Bangladesh, is divided into eight contractual sections. China Hydropower International and the Italian-Thai Company are responsible for one of these contract sections. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2024. When finished, the light rail line is expected to achieve speeds of up to 100 kilometres per hour and be able to transport 500,000 passengers on a daily basis. The line is expected to be constantly upgraded in the future.

To raise the speed of commutes, the Bangladeshi government plans to build five urban rail lines, two rapid bus routes, 1,200 kilometres of new roads, six viaducts and three city-circling ring roads by 2035. (Xinhua)
