Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told Parliament yesterday that the government is investigating allegations against BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s family members and BNP leaders of laundering around Tk. 1,200 crore.
The Bangladesh Bank department that looks into money-laundering is investigating the matter. The government will take legal measures against them if the allegation is proved true, Hasina said in reply to a question from Jatiya Party lawmaker Fakhrul Imam.
Referring to a report from the Global Intelligent Network (GIN), Imam wanted to know whether the government is aware of the money laundering by Khaleda’s family members and party leaders and would it take any action against them.
The Prime Minister said the government has the information. She also said the people know about the BNP’s misdeeds, including corruption and money laundering when the party was in power.
Hasina mentioned that her government has succeeded in bringing back the money laundered by Khaleda’s younger son Arafat Rahman Koko.
Hasina said the BNP government “holds the record for being a champion in corruption five times”. She also said she has more information about their corruption, but she does not want to disclose it for the sake of investigation.
Earlier, Fakhrul Imam had alleged that Khaleda’s family members have massive wealth worth Tk. 1,200 crore in 12 countries.
Khaleda owns the Al Araba shopping mall in Saudi Arabia, while Arafat Rahman Koko owns a multi-storied commercial building.
Besides, Khaleda’s nephew Tuhin owns three houses in Canada. Dr Mosharraf Hossain owns 13,000 shares of the Singapore hotel Marin Dee.
Barrister Aminul Haque has two apartments in London, while Moudud Ahmed has an apartment there, Imam had claimed.
