Kayes, Soumya out to make a point in SA tour

Imrul Kayes was the first choice in opening slot of Bangladesh alongside Tamim Iqbal since his debut before he lost his favourite position to Soumya Sarkar. As Kayes was sidelined with injury from the series against New Zealand, Soumya got an opportunity to accompany Tamim in the opening position.

Since then, Soumya, a natural attacking batsman has been opening for Bangladesh in the last three Test series against India, Sri Lanka and Australia. Kayes also got back into the side after recovering from the injury but didn’t get his opening position back so far as he is being considered as No. 3 position, what he indirectly said isn’t a position to his likings.

However luck appeared to be not with Soumya as well, as he also didn’t do anything to note in the opening slot, so as Kayes in the No.3 position. Both of them however was retained as the selectors still keep faith on them. The two now reached in a similar position as they need a career-saving innings in the much tougher series in South Africa.

Both Soumya and Kayes described their next Test series against South Africa as challenging, stating that they have to try to cut a good figure for the betterment of their career.

“Even though the series will be tougher for us, we’ve to play and try to fare well,” said Soumya Sarkar, who played so far nine Tests for Bangladesh after being fast-tracked in Test arc.

“If we can do well, it’ll be matter of honour for us. It’ll make us confident. Forgetting the previous matches’ performance, I’ll try to do something better,” Soumya told media after the end of his individual practice session.

Although the series will be tricky for them, they have set their targets in different ways to cement their position in Bangladesh’s Test squad.

Soumya said that he will attempt to restore his consistency in the South Africa tour, along with trying to stretch his innings to triple figure mark.

The left-handed opener scored 65 in four innings against the Aussies in the last Test series, wherein his highest run was 33 that he did in the first innings of the second Test in Chittagong.

“It’s the biggest matter to reach at triple digit in Test that I had wishes to do it since so many days,” the 25-year-old Sarkar said

“Last Australia series, I had also the same plan but I missed. So my every effort will be there in South Africa so that I could bat better regularly and make it successful,” he also said.

Imrul Kayes on the other hand said that he is determined to contribute for the team  as selectors selected him for the upcoming away Test series against the mighty South Africa.

Last Test series against Australia at home turf, Kayes’ total score was 21 (0, 2, 4, 15). And thus, it was deemed that he might not be selected for the next series. But the selectors kept their trust on him given his experience.

“I want to give thanks to selectors who keep their trust on me despite not doing well in the last series. So, I want to give retaliation of their trust in right vein,” said Imrul Kayes, who played so far 30 Tests for the country.

He said that he talked to the coach, who told him not to think anything other than playing good cricket in mind.

When asked about challenge in South African condition, the 30-year-old said, “Of course, it’ll be a challenge for me. I myself get it well also as the last series I didn’t play better cricket.”

‘Actually not only South Africa series but also every series is challenging for me.

Taking it as a challenge, I’ll try my utmost best to perform well here. The rest thing hinges on Allah’s will. I’ll try to play better cricket after being adjusted myself. I’m trying and working hard for this.”

Kayes made his debut against South Africa in 2008 when he was quite unknown about the wickets and condition there. Asked about it, the experienced batsman said that they started practicing to adjust with the wicket.
