Two major roads in Chandpur district town have long been in an extremely dilapidated condition, causing inconvenience to scores of people in the area.
The roads are: the one-km-long Bangabandhu Sarak and 1.5-km-long Truck Road.
Recently, heavy vehicles have been asked not to use Bangabandhu Sarak for safety reasons.
Bamboos have been put over the road from the passport office intersection up to the Stadium Road intersection to avert major accidents on this stretch. Heavy vehicles now have to use Comilla Road, Mission Road, Bus Stand area, Wireless Bazar area and Chairman Ghat area. This has been creating serious traffic tailbacks in these areas in the town.
A number of big potholes and craters have developed on this road, with rain waters remaining stagnant inside them for days.
Locals said Bangabandhu Sarak has become almost unfit for use of light, medium and heavy vehicles for the last eight months.
The dismal state of Truck Road depicts the same picture. The situation becomes worst during the rainy season.
Vehicles have been avoiding this road for the last eight to nine months.
According to locals, big potholes can be seen from Railway track area up to the end of the road at the BIWTA office.
When contacted, municipal mayor Nasiruddin Ahmed said repair works of these two roads would start in October. Tenders have been called in this regard and work orders would be given soon, he added.
