Six age-old trees were felled and sold without any tender by the Roads and Highways (R&H) department in Thakurgaon.
The trees were located on the officer’s quarter premises of R&H in the old bus stand area.
It was alleged that executive engineer of Thakurgaon R&H Sheikh Sohel ordered to cut and sell the trees without any tender. It was estimated that the price of the trees was about Tk 5 lakh.
Sources said the trees were felled on August 2 and August 3 and were kept secret. When the media people visited the spot yesterday they found no logs were there, only a few trunks were there. The trees included five neem and one jack fruit trees. The workers, who cut the trees, said they felled the trees at the order of the executive engineer. Md Kabir, an official of Thakurgaon Forest department, said nobody can cut any government tree without the permission of the Forest Department. In this case, no permission was sought.
Executive engineer Sheikh Sohel told The Independent that as an executive engineer he can cut trees without any tender. “As you do not know the rules and regulations of R&H you are saying so,” he exhorted. He said the trees became old and some were dying. The logs will be used in making furniture of the department and some will be used as firewood in the road construction sites of the department.
But when asked about the absence of the logs and fire woods on the officer’s quarter premises he could not give any satisfactory answer.
