Import of stones from Bhutan and India through Burimari land port that remained suspended from last two weeks due to a new instruction imposed by the land port authority is to resume today, port sources said.
President of the Importers and Exporters Association of Burimari land port Ruhul Amin Babul said the import of stones will start again
from today according to the newly imposed instruction and custom formalities.
The customs authorities earlier imposed a new law that all the imported goods must be unloaded at the customs yard first in presence of the customs officials instead of their own warehouses.
Protesting the embargo, traders and importers at the port stopped importing goods through the port as the new system will increase the loading, unloading and carrying costs of the imported goods.
The customs officials said the traders denied following the new instructions as they won't be able to continue their malpractice of false declaration to evade taxes.
The traders of the land port suspended their stones import from the neighboring Bhutan and India since last two weeks protesting the new instruction imposed by the port authority.
This correspondent visited the port on Monday and found that several hundreds of labourers of the port were sitting idle having no work due to suspension of the stone import.
Safaruddin leader of Burimari Port Labour Association said about 2,500 labourers are now working at different points in the port area.
They earn their livelihood by loading and unloading stones and other imported goods at the port.
But due to the suspension they passed about two weeks in great hardships with their families. Some of them went half fed and starving while the government incurred heavy losses in revenue due to the unwanted situation.
Burimari land pot authority sources told the independent that as per custom instruction imported goods must be unloaded in the custom yard area and after completing custom formalities, C&F agents will carry the goods to their own warehouse.
The traders suspended import of stones for their own interest for few days. Everything will be normal from today as per the custom procedure, the sources added.
