One held, 2.2kg gold seized
Customs intelligence officials early Monday seized 21 gold wires, weighing 2.228kg and arrested one passenger in this regard.
“Being tipped off, customs officials challenged Zinnat Mahmud Shamim, 41, a passenger of Malindo Air flight OD-162, as he tried to leave the Green Channel area of the airport hastily. Customs officials found existence of gold after scanning two of his bags. They found the gold wires wrapped in scotch tape and hidden inside the frame of the bags,” a customs release said.
According to the officials, he melted the gold and turned it in the shape of wires by mixing chemicals with it.
“He made 17 foreign tours only this year and claimed to be a businessman.
The estimated worth of the seized gold is Taka 1.10 crore,” the release added.
The arrested has been handed over to Airport Police Station and a case was filed in this regard.
BCL man held for ‘raping’ minor
Police in Gazipur on Monday arrested a local leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League(BCL) for ‘raping’ a class III student in Tongi.
The arrestee is Parvej Masud, son of Dadan Mia of Ersadnagar area in Tongi and joint general secretary of ward no 49 unit of BCL.
Quoting the vicitm’s family officer-in-charge of Tongi Model Police Station Firoj Talukdar said Masud took the child to his Ersadnagar house on Sunday evening and raped her.
Later locals rescued the girl from outside Masud’s house and took her to her parent house.
The girl was taken to Tongi general Hospital and then shifted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.
Police arrested Masud after conducting a drive in Ersadnagar area.
2 killed Ctg road crash
Two people were killed and 16 others were injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a container trailer at Joralganj area, in front of BSRM Steel Mills on Dhaka-Chittagong highway in on Monday.
One of the deceased has been identified as Md Asharaf, 42, a passenger of the bus. The bus driver was the second casualty, but his identity could not be ascertained.
Sub-inspector Shafiqul Islam, in-charge of Juralganj Highway Police camp, said the accident took place at the area around 5pm when a Chittagong-bound Prantik Paribahan bus from Dhaka collided head-on with a BSRM Steel Mills-bound container trailer, leaving 18 passengers of the bus injured.
Five ‘drug peddlers’ arrested
The members of Detective Branch (DB) police of South Keraniganj, in separate drives, arrested five alleged drug peddlers along with 460 pieces of yaba tablets from different places of the upazila on Monday night.
The arrestees are Md Babul, 35, Liton, 30, Md Abul Bashar, 30, Md Shahadat Hossain, 28, and Md Fahim, 25, all of are the residents of the area.
Dipak Chandra Saha, officer-in-charge of South Keraniganj DB police, said on secrete information a team of detective police conducted the drives at different places over the upazila and arrested the drug peddlers.
Later, the DB men searched their bodies and recovered 460 pieces of yaba pills from their possession.
Road crash kills one
A man was killed in a road accident at Shah Alibagh of Mirpur in the city on Monday.
The deceased was Md Abdul Kalam, 40, son of Abdul Khalek. Kalam was crossing the intersection of Mirpur 10 when two speedy buses knocked him down on Monday noon, leaving him critically injured, said Sub Inspector of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) Police Camp Bacchu Mia.
He was taken to DMCH where doctors declared him dead, he added.
