350 players enlisted for BPL players’ draft

The much-anticipated day-long players’ draft of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) for the 2017-2018 season will be held at the local hotel of the city on Saturday.

BPL governing council meanwhile finished their preparation to make the BPL players’ draft successful.

 “We’ve taken all our preparation for the players’ draft of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) for the 2016-2017 season. Already we’ve sent a copy of the enlisted players to our match commissioner,” Afzalur Rahman Sinha, chairman of BPL governing council, stold The Independent over cell phone.

“The day-long programme of the players’ draft will be taken place at the Le Meridien Dhaka Hotel, which will be kicked off 10.00am on Saturday,” Sinha told The Independent.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) director and its vice president Mahbubul Anam will conduct the function of the BPL players’ draft as the commissioner. He will be assisted by some board directors, whose have no involvements with any BPL franchisee.

The BPL governing council chairman said that this time a total of 350 local and overseas players have been enlisted for the players’ draft.

“We have enlisted a total of 350 players, whom of them 200 overseas players of 12 different countries. Along with them, 150 more players will join with them on players’ draft from local stock,” Rahman revealed.

“Players have been divided into five categories (A+, A, B, C and D) beside the icon category. Now we’ve seven icon players including Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah Riyad, Soumya Sarkar and Sabbir Rahman,” he said.  

Sinha also said that they didn’t fix any price of the icon players as they drop the matter of icon players on franchisees, who have already fixed their icon players.

Defending champions Dhaka Dynamites, Rajshahi Kings, Comilla Victorians and Khulna Titans roped in Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah Riyad respectively.

On the other hand, Rangpur Riders, Chittagong Vikings and Sylhet Sixers grabbed Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, Soumya Sarkar and Sabbir Rahman correspondingly.       

This year each franchisee could pick 15 players including three retained players from local battery to form their contingent for the blockbuster tournament. In case of foreign players, a new rule has been implemented whereby each team could sign minimum five overseas players and maximum unlimited. But they could field maximum four players.

Like previous edition, a total of seven teams will compete for the BPL title. Of them, Sylhet come back in the BPL blast in the new name after Sylhet Sixers under the new ownership. Barisal Bulls have been omitted not to meet the rules and condition of the BPL governing council.

Each franchisee will pick foreign player or players from both ways of the players’ draft and out of the draft. In case of out of the draft’ players, Afzalur Rahman issued a stern warning, stating that that they will not take any responsibility of those players, who will be sold out of the players’ draft.
