There was a record 124mm of rainfall in Dhaka city during the past 24 hours, ending at 3pm yesterday (Monday). The capital was swamped by 80mm of showers in nine hours from 6am to 3pm, Met Office records showed.
Accompanied by lightning and thunder, the rain once again exposed the poor drainage system in some areas. Mirpur in the north to Motijheel in the south went under ankle to knee-deep water. This caused immense suffering to commuters, in particular schoolchildren, as the rain began early in the morning.
