The revolver belonging to late General Muhammad Ataul Gani Osmani, who was commander-in-chief of the Bangladesh Forces during the 1971 War of Liberation, will be handed over to the military museum by one of his cousins soon.
At present, the .38 bore revolver (No.1283) is in the possession of Osmani’s cousin retired Brigadier General Asbarul Haque.
In 1985, Osmani, who was the commander in chief of Bangladesh forces during the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, had gifted the firearms to his cousin Asbarul.
After receiving the revolver, Asbarul was preserving the arms after obtaining an arms licence from the Jessore district magistrate in 1985.
The retired brigadier has sent a letter to the home ministry seeking permission to give the revolver to the military museum in the capital.
The matter has also been informed to the secretariat of the chief of army staff, a high official of the home ministry said.
“We are considering the application to handover the revolver to the military museum,” he said.
In the letter, Brigadier General (ret’d) Asbarul said that he is now sufferings from old age complexities and that’s why he wants to handover the revolver to the museum to display it for the visitors. Osmani fought in Burma during World War II and served in the Pakistan Army until 1967. General Osmani retired in 1972.
After the country’s independence, he entered politics and he served as a member of parliament and cabinet minister in the government of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
