JS to discuss Rohingya crisis, 16th amendment

Parliament is likely to discuss two crucial issues -- the influx of Rohingyas and the Supreme Court's verdict annulling the 16th amendment to the Constitution -- in a day or two once notices from MPs are placed in the House, reports UNB. Deputy Speaker Fazle Rabbi Mia, who chaired the House after Maghrib recess yesterday, suggested that separate notices be placed to discuss the issues when two MPs sought floor for unscheduled discussion in this regard. "If you place notices as per the rules of procedure, these will be considered," he said.

Independent MP Dr Rustum Ali Faraji sought floor to discuss the Rohingya issue while another independent MP Tahjib Alam Siddique wanted to talk over the SC verdict on the 16th amendment to the Constitution. But the Deputy Speaker did not give them floor, saying it will produce no fruitful discussion if it is held without

notices. "If discussions are held following notices, it'll be fruitful and Parliament might adopt resolutions over the two issues," he added.

At this stage, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed took the floor and said there may be two general discussions -- on the Rohingya crisis on Monday and the 16th amendment verdict on Tuesday -- after the Speaker gets notices from MPs.

In response, Fazle Rabbi appreciated Tofail's suggestion, saying if the House receives notices, the Speaker in consultation with the Leader of the House can fix two separate days for general discussion on the two issues.
