About 5.41 lakh small and marginal farmers in the flood-hit districts of the country will get seeds and fertilisers worth Tk. 58.77 crore to grow crops in the upcoming season under the incentive programme of the Ministry of Agriculture. “We'll provide seeds and fertilisers free of cost among 541,201 farmers. This incentive will be given in the flood-hit districts so that the farmers could increase the production and recoup the losses suffered in recent floods,” Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury said yesterday.
She was speaking at a press conference in the Secretariat in the capital. The minister said that seeds of several varieties, such as wheat, maze, mustard, lentil, BT brinjal and linseed would be distributed among farmers free of cost. In addition to that, DAP and MOP fertilisers would also be distributed among the flood-hit farmers, she added.
The government expects the aid to produce nearly Tk 7.28 billion in crops, with a twelve-fold return on investment. “Each farmer will get seeds and fertilisers for one bigha of land. Every farmer would be able to earn Tk. 12 against spending only Tk. 1,” the minister noted.
The incentive to the flood-hit farmers will be given from the ministry's own fund and thus no extra fund would have to be arranged in the budget, she said in reply to a query.
“This incentive programme will continue for the advancement of agriculture,” Matia Chowdhury added.
Agricultural Secretary Mohammad Moinuddin Abdullah and other senior officials were present at the press briefing.
Farmers of three low-lying haor districts in the north-east region — Sunamganj, Moulvibazar and Sylhet—have lost their Boro crops in recent flash floods.
Besides, most farmers of northern districts of Kurigram, Nilphamari, Gaibandha, Lalmonirhat, Rangpur, Dinajpur, Bogra, Sirajganj as well as central districts of Tangail, Jamalpur, Rajbari and adjacent areas have also their crops due to the floods that inundated large parts of the country for over a month.
