SYLHET: Sylhet central jail is going to be shifted from Dhopadighir Par in Sylhet city to Badaghat, on the outskirts of the city, in December after 227 years of old one's establishment, reports UNB .
Brigadier General Iftekhar Uddin, inspector general of Sylhet central jail, said they want to shift the jail by December this year.
Meanwhile, Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith also directed us to shift the jail by this timeframe, he said, informing that the new jail will accommodate about 2,000 inmates.
“We have been doing the work relentlessly aimed at shifting the jail by upcoming December. Almost all related works of the jail have been finished; only Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) has remained unfinished,” said Sheikh Mizanur Rahamn, executive engineer of Sylhet Public Works department.
STP is a must as the new jail building located on the river bank, he said, adding that after purifying, the sewerage water has to be released anywhere.
The rest of the work, including finishing touch, is going on in full swing, he continued.
Sylhet central jail senior jailer Abdul Jalil said they are taking preparation to shift the jail by the deadline following directives of the Finance Minister. According to master plan of the under-construction Sylhet central jail, a total of 64 buildings will be constructed at the jail compound; but only seven buildings will be allocated for inmates' accommodation.
Of the seven buildings, four six-storey buildings will be allocated for male inmates while three, including four-storey one and two two-storey buildings, for female inmates, said project engineer Mizanur Rahman.
Five hospitals, five one-storey kitchens, one four-storey silo, a two-storey rest house, a four-storey daycare centre, mosque, school and library also remain at the jail compound.
The foundation stone of the Tk 197-crore project was laid in 2012 on the 30-acre land and it was set to be completed by June 2017.
