Many Ctg roads go under water

It took only nine hours for 38mm rains between 6am till 3pm to inundate some of the city streets, lacking proper drainage clogged with garbage and polythene bags that slowed down traffic with long tailbacks in some of them.

The situation was worse in Motijheel, Malibagh, Mouchak, Banani, Karwanbazar and streets in the Tejgaon industrial area, where drainage was poor remaining uncleared, witnesses who traveled and suffered stuck for hours in the streets there said.  It was most difficult for those taking a bus ride from Motijheel to Tejgaon down Malibagh, Mouchak and Moghbazar where the rainwater remain stagnant for hours as the drains there have become virtually non-existent developing large potholes because of the under construction flyover and long neglect to the street below.  

It was enough to remind the citizens that the monsoon was yet to leave the country and they have to suffer from occasional burst of rains with thunder and high winds.

Yesterday’s falls were due to a fairly active monsoon over Bangladesh.

More rains are expected with chances of heavy to very heavy falls at places and likelihoods of hill slides in Chittagong, Mymensingh  and Sylhet Divisions for the next 24hours beginning at 2pm on Sunday till 2pm on Monday, Abdur Rahman, a meteorologist at the Dhaka Met Office said.

Meanwhile, heavy rains upstream in Assam and Meghalaya state of north-east India have started swelling the Jamuna and the Surma in the north.

Only Surma was flowing 131cm above its danger level in Kanaighat of Sylhet.

It was because of heavy rains upstream and in Sylhet.  

But the Jamuna that carries the flows of the Brahmaputra down the Arunachal did not cross its danger level even at its flood plains in Bahadurabad of Jamalpur and downstream further at Sirajganj and Sariakandi of Bogra, which were ravaged by floods last month.

However, flood forecasting and warning centre (FFWC) executive engineer Sazzad Hossain said, the rivers would slide after rising for two days.

OUR Correspondent adds from Ctg: Many areas of city were submerged under knee to chest-deep water yesterday causes untold sufferings to the city residents due to torrential rain and high tide.

Due to the rain lower-lying areas of the city witnessed severe water-logging and huge traffic snarls on the street, inflicting sufferings to commuters.

The Chittagong Patenga Met Office recorded 44.2 mm rainfall in the last 24-hour till 9am on Sunday. However, at noon the rain has been reduced in some extant.

Meghna Tanchanga, assistant meteorologist said, “It is raining because the monsoon winds are active. There is a possibility of heavy rainfall for the next 24 hours.”

Many office goers, students, and garments workers were found stranded at roads for vehicles in different areas of the city. The city commuters had to endure sufferings while traveling through roads Bahaddarhat, Muradpur, Gate No-2, GEC circle, WASA Circle and Lalkhan Bazar, Agrabad and Halishahar area.

The commuters also suffered who used the roads Agrabad, Halishahar, Patenga and Bakalia and Chawkbazar as heavy traffic clogs. The areas--Sholoshahar, Gate No 2, Muradpur, Chawkbazar, Badurtola, Kapashgola, Agrabad Access Road, Commerce College-- were went under water and water clogs were created in these areas. “I am waiting for vehicles over two hours at Muardpur for going to Agrabad. There is no vehicle as the road has gone under water. I have to go to my office though already office time has been over,” said Haradan Biswas, a private employee.  

“The rain water has entered our house; the water damaged our many households. We are in water logged. Every mayor of the city promises us to solve the water logging of the city but our fate remained unchanged for the years,” said Naima Nipa, a housewife of city’s Kapashgola area.

The students of educational institutions, garments workers and office goers faced immense sufferings due to the water congestion.  “We are returning home without going to school as the road went under water. Moreover, there is heavy gridlock,” said, Hasina Mamotaz at Chawkbazar while she was returning home with her daughter who is a student of city’s BAWA School.

The city commuters said as the drain have been filed and water could not recede the water logging was created with the rain.
