‘Adoption of latest tech can increase crop output’

BSS

RANGPUR: Innovation and adoption of time-befitting latest agriculture technologies can increase crop output at reduced costs despite adverse impacts of climate change to ensure food security, reports BSS.

“Adoption of latest technologies can make farm activities more profitable along with improving environment, soil health and fertility,” said former Chief Scientific Officer and Head of Agronomy Division of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute Dr MA Mazid.

He put emphasis on mechanisation of agriculture and popularisation of conservation agriculture (CA)-based technologies to reduce crop duration, ensure better nutrient and fertilizer management to reduce expenditure for labours, fuel and irrigation water.

“The farmers have already started getting benefits of using CA-based minimum tillage or zero tillage, direct seeded rice and bed-planting in light texture soil at different areas to get better crop output and reap more benefits,” Mazid added. Dinajpur Hub Coordinator of International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center Anarul Haque stressed on expanded farming of short duration, drought-, saline- and flood- tolerant cereal crops using CA-based technologies and newer cropping patterns.

To facilitate the process, he suggested for quicker dissemination of the proven CA-based technologies among farmers with increased subsidies for easier procurement of necessary machineries, inputs, spares and other materials by them.

Chairman of Rangpur-based research organisation Northbengal Institute of Development Studies Agriculturist Dr Syed Samsuzzaman said adoption of CA-based technologies will facilitate crop intensification and remunerative markets for produce.
