Demo against new credit system at RUET

Correspondent, Rajshahi

Over a hundred students of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) staged demonstration on the campus yesterday demanding withdrawal of the ‘new credit system’ in their year change examinations. They also laid a seige to the office of the vice-chancellor for five hours since 10am. Later they withdrew their programme at 3pm when the VC came out of the office with police protection. The agitators also put the RUET offices under lock and key.
According to the new curriculum introduced during the 2013-14 session, it was made mandatory that the students must complete a total of 33 out of 40 credits, in two semesters in order to get promoted for the next year.  Earlier in the morning, they formed a human chain and held a rally near the administrative building.
Mahmud Hossain, a agitating student, said the RUET academic council in 2013 introduced the new credit system that confronted a big number of students to suffer year loss.
He further said under the new system all students must have to earn 33 credits out of 40 in a year to be upgraded into the next year of their four-year courses, otherwise, they have to complete the course with juniors and loss a year. Before introduction of the new system, the students who managed less than 33 credits were allowed to continue study and earn the required credits through separate short courses later, he added.
Babu Ahmed, another student claimed the RUET authority did not let them know the new rules beforehand. “We learnt the new system after appearing at the examinations”. Talking to the journalist, RUET vice chancellor Prof Rafiqul Alam Beg said the students’ demand is ‘illogical’.
Out of 725 students, only 29 could not manage the required credits in the ongoing academic session due to their own failures to attend classes and for not studying well, said the VC.
