Bangladesh can’t cope with Rohingya influx: Minister

BRAHMANBARIA: Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq yesterday said Bangladesh cannot cope with the massive influx of Rohingya refugees from Myanmar, reports BSS.

"Bangladesh is providing assistance to the Rohingya refugees on humanitarian grounds," he told a reception accorded to students organised by Rabeya Khatun Memorial Library at Dhaleswar village under Akhaura upazila in the district. The minister urged the world community to become vocal helping the Rohingya refugees to return their homeland.

"Rohingya people are being tortured brutally. Their homes were set on fire. They are entering Bangladesh after crossing the Naf River putting their life at risk," he added.

Akhaura Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammed Shamsuzzaman and Akhaura Municipality Mayor Takjil Khalifa Kajol, among others, joined the function with Rabeya Khatun Memorial Library founder Aksir M Chowdhury in the chair.

College girl commits suicide

A college student allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself at Stadiumpara of the district town on Thursday.

The deceased was Liana, 18, daughter of Ashrafuddin Ahmed from Stadiumpara of the town and a student of MM College. Locals found Liana hanging at her residence and took her to Jessore General Hospital where doctors declared her dead, said Sub Inspector of Kotwali Police Station Shahinur Islam Shahin.

100pc power in 10 upzilas

With the aim of providing electricity facility to all the people of the country by 2021, the government will bring 10 more upzilas under cent percent electricity coverage on Sunday,

reports BSS.

The upazilas which will be brought under 100 percent electricity coverage are: Mollahat and Fakirhat of Bagherhat, Hakimpur of Dinajpur, Kotchandpur of Jhenaidah, Fenchuganj and Sadar of Sylhet, Bheramara of Kushtia, Bhairab of Kishorganj, Sitakunda of Chittagong and Sadar of Narsingdi district.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to inaugurate 100-percent electricity coverage in the country's 10 upazilas on Sunday morning at her official residence Ganabhaban.

Apart from this, the Prime Minister will inaugurate Ashuganj 450 MW North Combined Cycle, Simple Cycle Plant (North) and Keraniganj furnace-oil based plant having 108 MW generation-capacity. Moreover, she will also open transmission of additional 60 MW power from Tripura plant, India.

"The government is pledged-bound to supply 100% electricity to every household by 2021," State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid told BSS here yesterday.  

Highlighting the measures taken by the Awami League government to make the country self-reliant in power production, he said currently 80 percent people of the country are getting electricity and the power-generation capacity reached 15,761 MW.
