Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader yesterday said Bangladesh doesn't have the capacity to take the burden of huge Rohingya people who have fled persecution there, reports UNB.
"As we have been trying to tackle the huge losses caused by the recent countrywide floods we are unable to take the burden of huge Rohingyas entering the country from Myanmar," the minister said at a press briefing on Eid holidaymakers' return journey to Dhaka at the secretariat.
When asked about government's stance on Rohingya issue, he said the government's stance on Rohingyas is nothing new. "The government is handling the Rohingya situation very carefully."
"Such hu ge influx of Rohingyas into Bangladesh is a matter of grave concern. Over 150,000 Rohingyas have already entered Bangladesh in the wake of fresh violence there," said Quader, also the general secretary of ruling Awami League.
Bangladesh is also worried whether firearms and drugs are being smuggled into the country with the fresh Rohingya influx, the Minister said adding that the government has to work on Rohingya issue keeping the matters in mind.
The government has already talked to the United Nations about its concern about Rohingyas and its inability to take the burden of Rohingyas, he added.
"We have already urged the UN to take measures about repatriation of Rohingyas to Myanmar".
"We don't have inhumane attitude towards the Rohingyas. If we had so, it over 150,000 Rohingyas couldn't enter into Bangladesh."
"We have called the Myanmar Ambassador to Bangladesh four times and protested the push-in of Rohingyas to Bangladesh," he added.
